The area of Bournemouth was largely uninhabited at the turn of the nineteenth century
The name 'Bournemouth' derives from 'Bourne Mouth' or the mouth of the Bourne Stream
The village of Burnemouth became a resort in the 1830's after development by Sir George William Tapps-Gervis
It wasn't until the 1840's that visitor number rose due to the belief that visiting such seaside places would improve ones health - especially chest complaints
Bournemouth Pier opened in 1861
The railway came to Bournemouth in 1870
