Dorchester Fact File
Dorchester is the county town of Dorset and is known for its eighteenth century architecture
The town was founded by the Romans after they captured the Iron Age Maiden Castle. The Romans built an an amphitheatre to the south of the town at Maumbury Rings
In 1834, for their part in forming a trade union, agricultural workers now known as the Tolpuddle martyrs, were transported from Dorchester to Australia. Their story is told at the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum in Dorchester
