Sherborne was originally called 'scir burne' a Saxon name meaning 'the place of the clear stream'
A fortified palace was built in Sherborne in the twelfth century by Roger de Caen, Bishop of Salisbury. The ruins of this building are known as Sherborne Old Castle
In 1594, Sir Walter Raleigh built a mansion in the grounds of the old castle. This is now known as Sherborne Castle and has been home to the Digby family since 1617. The castle is also home to a popular wedding fair
